
Dr. WAHAB, Kolawole Wasiu

Dr. Wahab, an Associate Professor of Medicine and a Consultant Neurologist, graduated from the University of Ilorin, a top rate Nigerian Federal university in 1997 with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. He commenced his postgraduate residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital in the year 2000. He had postgraduate training in Neurology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital from 2003 to 2004. He graduated with the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Internal Medicine with sub-specialization in Neurology in 2005. He bagged Master of Public Health degree from the University of Ilorin in 2009 and Master of Science in Clinical Neurology from University College London in 2010 where he studied on Commonwealth Scholarship.
He had further professional trainings at the University College London Hospitals, the Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. Dr Wahab is a recipient of many international awards and scholarships including Commonwealth Scholarship, American Academy of Neurology International Scholarship, World Federation of Neurology Travelling Fellowship and International Brain Research Organization Scholarship among others.
His major research interest is stroke epidemiology and outcome and he currently has about 50% of his publications related to these. He is passionate about reducing the burden of stroke in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries. In February, 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Award by the American Academy of Neurology with an advocacy project focused on reduction of the burden of stroke in Nigeria. He is the University of Ilorin Site Principal Investigator in the ongoing Stroke Investigative Research and Education Network (SIREN) project.
Twice elected the Best Lecturer in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences of the University of Ilorin by the graduating medical students in 2011 and 2013, Dr Wahab has authored and co-authored many research papers in reputable peer-reviewed journals. He also serves on the editorial board of reputable journals at national and international levels and serves as a reviewer to several peer-reviewed, high-impact journals. He is the current Coordinator of University of Ilorin Stem Cell Research Centre.
